Support / Stories of our Impact

William Barton

Composer and Didgeridoo virtuoso

“The Songlines of my people have always and will always exist. But it's also important that together we create new ones.”

For thousands of years, my people have been passing on our stories, knowledge and Culture. These are our Songlines.

Music is in my DNA. It is how I keep connected to Country and my Ancestors, and how I share the inspiration the Australian landscape provides me with people around Australia and the world.

At the root of my music will always be my Didgeridoo (or Yidaki), but I am also lucky to have access to a huge canvas of musical inspiration, from rock and hip-hop, to classical music, which gives me new ways to connect with others and my own culture.

Collaboration requires a deep level of connection and trust. It takes time to listen to each other and to find a common language through our music and traditions. But trusting others to be part of my stories is powerful, and it brings out the best in me too.

Last year I wrote a work for Omega Ensemble [Gift — Our Breath of Life]. As working musicians, it’s so rare to be given time to let the collaborative process work. But as a group, we spent time in the studio, sharing our ideas and stories, and once the music was finished, together we toured and performed around Australia.

Omega Ensemble are adventurous and exciting. The Ensemble cared for my music and truly brought it to life, and through the time we spent together we built a strong friendship. The performances were really special and I know audiences felt that too.

Much of my music is deeply personal, about my family and the land where I grew up. But for me, music is also about our shared humanity. The Songlines of my people have always and will always exist. But it's also important that together we create new ones.
